WHAT MILWAUKEE HAS TO SAY

Customer review - Hand earing Paul's jewelry ring

I brought in my already beautiful, heirloom wedding ring to add a piece of our marriage. Vivian knew right away what I was looking for. We placed the order and was told 6 weeks. But we got it back in 3. I absolutely LOVE the addition. It’s still a simple, elegant ring with 3 generations of love.

Ring Resizing FAQ

We have a full-fledged jewelry servicing operation on site, so our turnaround time for resizing rings is pretty quick. Most resizing projects can be done within a week, if not sooner.

For more complex resizing projects that come with rings of particular settings, the lead time may take longer. In any case, we will go over lead times with you prior to starting any resizing project.

In the majority of projects, resizing a ring up or down won’t leave any noticeable marks on it. That being said, there are certain scenarios where a faint mark may be present.

Such situations are where the ring in question is made out of a highly unique alloy that’s difficult to match. In these scenarios, if we can’t source the exact match for the original alloy, we will use a highly similar one that might be slightly different in hue than the original. It’s here where a faint mark may become present.

Rest assured, that before we start any resizing project, we will go through with you the expectations of the final finish.

We can resize rings made out of gold, silver, palladium, and platinum. There are some metals, however, that we cannot resize rings for - such as tungsten or titanium. The properties of these metals make resizing almost impossible to do altogether.

Regarding setting types, there are some settings that bring with them challenges for resizing, such as tension settings. Tension set rings rely on the precise tension of the metal to hold the gemstone in place, making resizing difficult without altering its balance.

If you’re unsure about the possibilities of resizing your ring, give us a call or bring the ring to our showroom, and our team will be happy to go over what’s possible with you.

The number of sizes up or down you can resize a particular ring depends on its structure and design. If the ring is relatively simple with minimal adornments or gemstones on its shank, resizing multiple sizes bigger or smaller is usually possible.

It’s important to keep in mind though, that we typically don’t recommend changing a ring more than two sizes up or down. Drastic alterations to a ring's size can bring about changes to its structure that would challenge its physical integrity.

The procedure for resizing rings depends on whether they are being sized up or down. Below are summaries of both scenarios:

Sizing Up
Sizing up a ring is a relatively straightforward procedure. First, a cut is made into the band of the ring, and then the circumference is expanded, shaped, and filled together with an appropriately matching metal. The result is a ring with a larger diameter.

Sizing Down
Sizing down a ring has a similar procedure as sizing up, except it includes two cuts into the band. In this case, the portion of the band between the two cuts is taken out, then the ring is shaped into a smaller circumference, and then a matching alloy is added to rejoin it together.

At our studio, the finishing touches of both procedures include a thorough cleaning, buffing, and polishing, so you can rest assured that your new fitting ring will have a professional, showroom finish.
